Controller object split function seems too sensitive when putting back together

When splitting the controller object in two halves, the distance required to reform the controller is too large, making it easy to accidentally do so when assuming a "normal" posture.
Reducing the radius or requiring user input to put the controllers back together (ex.: press the grip buttons when the two halves are close) would be appreciated.
